Nobody can say its summer time without thinking about icy cold drinks in hand and sitting by the poolside. Every day we wish that a cold glass of lemonade greets us at home when we come back from work in the scorching sun. While lassi and buttermilk remain the evergreen summer drinks, who doesn’t love a change? Enjoy your summer with these delicious drinks and thank me later. It’s healthy as well! What else do we need?

SATTU SHARBAT

Summer

I thought I will do justice to this drink by mentioning it first. This delicious drink all the way from “Bihar” is my personal favourite summer go-to drink! This desi summer drink keeps the body cool and is the easiest to make. All we need is some sattu flour, sugar and water and tada! The summer drink to our rescue is ready!

LEMONADES WITH A TWIST

The lemonade has been our friend in need since forever but what if we add a little bit of something else to make it our best friend?

Strawberry-Thyme Lemonade

Strawberries! There is happiness in its name, isn’t it? Adding a bit of sugar syrup, thyme can add a herbaceous flavour to this fruity liberation! Don’t forget to add the strawberries though.

Frozen Blueberry Lemonade

Frozen is a good word. It screams “ice-cream” for me. Be it any time of the year, anybody could agree to eat anything that’s frozen. Well, except for the frozen peas. Just mix up lemonade and crushed blueberries, freeze it up and you will be sipping it up in no time!

 PALOMA

Let’s not be partial and do justice to cocktails as well.

This popular Mexican drink is usually made with a grapefruit-flavoured soda or sometimes with fresh juice. It is a terrific mix of sweetness and tartness that is just perfect for a sunny day. Substitute mezcal for tequila to add a bit of smokiness and complexity. All you need to make this amaze-balls drink is:

  • 2 ounces tequila
  • 1-ounce pink grapefruit juice
  • 1-ounce lime juice
  • ½ ounce agave nectar (or simple syrup)
  • Splash of club soda
  • Pinch of salt

Mix all the ingredients except soda. Shake it up and add soda with ice cubes.

Slurp Slurp!

HIBISCUS JUICE

This unfamiliar drink needs recognition because it’s worth it! To be honest, I had the opportunity to have this drink a year back when I went to Auroville ashram in Pondicherry. I have been a fan of this drink ever since. Ingredients include:

  • Water
  • 1 ½ cups dried hibiscus flower
  • Ginger
  • Sugar

Chill it in the refrigerator and drink it with club soda or alone.

BAEL JUICE

I still remember those summer vacations when my grandma used to grab me and make me drink bael juice forcefully and I used to hate that part of the day. While I drank with a half heart, she used to tell me all the benefits of this juice. This sharbat is actually a wonderful medicinal drink and it also helps your body attain the right temperature in this heat. It helps in fighting against heart disease, gastric problems, constipation, diarrhoea and various other diseases. It has also got anti-microbial properties and anti-inflammatory properties. So much in a drink, it almost qualifies as a superman of drinks!

Just squeeze out the juice from the bael fruit,  filter, add ice cubes and sugar and a healthy drink is ready for your aid!
