For a time longer than enough I have wrapped my head around knowing a lot of people. The friend with insecurities, the friend who is selfish, the friend who is wise, the friend who is hopping like a maniac all the time, the friend who has a head bigger than my entire body and then there is a friend who has OCD. They are very particular about what they want and how they want and it’s just infuriating.
To spend an extra amount of time just to get your pens in an order or to avoid putting trash in the dustbin so that it won’t become dirty!
So I asked myself – Do they really suffer from a problem or it’s just a choice?
Here is what I have learnt.
1. WHAT IS OCD?
It is an anxiety disorder. OCD stands for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. The name has it’s meaning literally ( not so pro tip – that’s how you start an answer to a 10 mark question).
‘Obsession’ foretell that a series of repetitive thoughts, most commonly unwanted ones and sensation are followed by ‘Compulsion’ that is the need to perform according to the thoughts to relieve anxiety. So it’s a disease actually and that’s not something anybody wants. ( Neither the sufferer nor the tolerator)
2. WHAT ARE THE COMMON TYPES OF OCD?
If you are someone who is afraid of dirt and washes hand multiple times or check things repeatedly or you won’t throw away the bloodstained dress ( I hope you don’t have one because that is weird), take a seat in the OCD group. Take Sheldon ( TBBT) for example, everytime he knocks – it has a pattern and it has to be three times!
3. HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU HAVE OCD?
Most of the times people have either obsession or compulsion and doesn’t hamper their daily life to fulfil the need to perform an activity in order to find relief. So if your pillars of personal life, social life or professional life are falling, that might be a clue. And if you have a high IQ, that’s another clue.

5. HOW TO TREAT OCD?
There are available therapies like :
• Exposure and response prevention
It involves repetitive exposure to the source of your obsession and simultaneously refraining to do any
It involves the discussion of exactly why you feel the exaggerated need to act.
6. CAN YOU HELP A FRIEND WITH OCD?
Of course, you can. Be supportive but don’t follow their rituals. Don’t insult them in any way and surely don’t write an article about it ( Irony at it’s best) or become obsessed with breaking their OCD as its an OCD too (Just saying).
