Are robots becoming our new equivalents?

Classic series like Westworld, The Matrix and The Terminator may or may not be categorised as fiction anymore by people since they are becoming so real. If there is something common on all these series then that is the prediction that Artificial Intelligence will surpass any kind of intelligence ever witnessed before, and not necessarily for good.

What is Artificial Intelligence?

Machines are created to make human lives easier. Any machine that we commonly use today is under our control. But what if a machine gets out of control? A smart machine, for instance, is a machine which can function independently without any human intervention. It can perform certain actions depending on the situations. If it then encounters a new situation, which it does not recognise, it makes its own decisions depending on its training algorithm. This is artificial intelligence.

What level are we at?

Look at the man in the picture. Looks real, right? You are wrong. That is a humanoid robot created by Osaka University in Japan. This ultra-realistic robot was modelled to copy the looks, behaviour, traits and movements of a Danish professor.

Hope you are getting an idea of level we are currently at.

Not just intelligent humanoid bots that are being researched; it is also self-driving vehicles, smart assistants on your smartphones, robotic dogs, birds, fish, drones, etc.

The Future

The staircase depicts the capabilities of intelligence that can be achieved artificially. This prompts us to ask one question: Artificial Intelligence is a good concept with its positives and negatives, but is it really safe to harness something emotionless and self-resolving, with this level of intelligence?

Stephen Hawking said, “The development of full Artificial Intelligence could spell the end of the human race.” You may banish this off as fiction or may think there are a 100 years left for such a colossal apocalypse to occur, but that’s not the case, unfortunately.

Renowned physicist and futurist Ian Pearson say that an artificial intelligence apocalypse could happen in the next 10 years. “We’re pretty much at the point where you could start doing evolutionary design projects that would come up with an AI which is of human-level intelligence and conscious within two to three years.” , said Pearson.

A number of people have called for control on the usage of Artificial Intelligence, but there doesn’t seem to be any slowing down.

Think of your future generations. We are fighting with other humans only but will they be fighting with machines then?
