Homeopathy a successor to allopathy?

The effectiveness of Homoeopathy has been a topic of hot debate ever since it’s an invention in 1796 by German physician Samuel Hahnemann. The scientific community has always looked upon it with stern eyes and always questioned its scientific basis. Often referring it as pseudoscience.

The essential principle of homeopathy is ‘Like cures like’ which itself is not backed by any scientific data. It means that drug that causes specific symptoms can be used to cure diseases which causes the same symptoms. The other most important law is infinitesimal doses, which states that when the drug is mixed in water or alcohol, they increase its therapeutic potency.

According to an article on Science-Based Medicine, homeopathy medicines are diluted so much that the final product doesn’t even have a single molecule of the original drug. The very concept of infinitesimal doses is against laws of chemistry, pharmacology and thermodynamics. Homoeopaths claim that water retains the essence of drugs which is not possible as water molecules can’t retain the essence of such complex molecules.

According to Kurzgesagt science channel on YouTube homeopathy works in some cases because of the placebo effect. Placebo effect means that a beneficial effect produced by a placebo drug or treatment, which cannot be attributed to the placebo itself and must, therefore, be due to the patient’s belief in that treatment. Another factor is time, which essentially means that is even if a patient takes a homeopathic medicine, the improvement in health which one sees is due to immune system doing its work over time and not necessarily because of the medicine.

Research conducted by Australian National Health and Medical Research Council has confirmed that homeopathy is nothing more than treatment with placebos. The final report stated that people who choose homeopathy put their lives in danger by delaying treatment from other scientifically proven conventional methods.

Homeopathy was born in a time when medical science was still going through its dark initial period and the knowledge about medical science was quite puny. We didn’t know about the cause of many diseases and organs which it affected, and surgery was done without sedatives and anaesthesia making the whole process painful. Homeopathy on other was not at all painful and was accompanied by some restrictions from certain activities and food due to which many patients started going the homoeopathic way. Also, the lack of empathy in allopathic treatment also made people choose homoeopathic treatment as it was more intimate and comfortable.

However modern advancement in medical science has negated all the negative side effects of treatment of early ages. Modern scientific tests have also pointed out the inefficiency of homeopathy and denounced it scientifically. People who still follow are putting their lives in danger and should abstain from doing so.
